Draft day in the NHL. Wild trade day, or just picks, either could happen, which do I want? #NHL #Hurricanes

Ahh, draft day is here. It’s always among my favorite days in the NHL calendar. You never ever know if your team will go trade crazy to move the pick or move up, or if they will just sit tight and keep all their picks and go about their normal business. Traditionally there are a few deals on draft day but not quite the wild wheeling and dealing of the NFL. I happen to love when the picks and deals go flying around, it just makes the night a ton more fun to watch. For my 2 teams the Canes and the Isles I want to see two different scenarios occur.

ISLANDERS

I will start with the Isles first b/c they are a bit more simple. I think they need to keep this pick and take the best available player. There will be either A) A STUD defenseman there to take OR B) A monster forward who falls into their lap. The Isles have a ton of young talent on the team right now and could use a guy who is closer to ready then most. Adding a big guy to help take some of the pressure off Tavares would be great but so would a cornerstone D man to have on the blue line for years to come.

The only outside trade option that might be there is if the big Forwards slide all the way to their pick, then people might come calling. If teams want them bad enough and throw some picks or a player their way the Isles could move down a handful of picks and still land an impact D man. There are a bunch of good D to go around so it’s not a bad option.

MY PREDICTION: Murray falls to them at 4. If not they just take Dumba and call it a day. Good solid young D-men are hard to come by and the Isles seem to want one bad.

Hurricanes: Things aren’t so cut and dry for the Carolina Hurricanes. The natives are beginning to get restless and unless we see a good strong outing from the Canes this year in the regular season, we could see quite the empty building in Raleigh for some time in the near future. This means getting some proven talent in here NOW via trade or FA. Since there is ZERO chance Rutherford (Canes GM) is going to pony up the cash for Parise (and after the playoff showing by Parise they really shouldn’t pay the zillions he’s going to get now anyway), it looks like they will have to trade for a scorer. This could mean shipping this #8 pick out with a prospect or two for someone like Bobby Ryan. With the word being out that he’s a MUCH better and cheaper option then Rick Nash both in salary and trade chips, look for his price to go up as the day goes on.

The readiness of the forwards in this draft class seems to be split in the eyes of the gurus and pundits out there. I can’t find a solid answer to if any of these guys can potentially step in right away and contribute so that tells me not too many are likely. Last year saw 7 guys step in and get some NHL time. It’s likely with so many D men out there this year that the number will be prob less, and more like 4-5. I think if the Canes have a shot at two of these potential “right away guys” in Grigorenko or Galchenyuk (Both Centers) they should, and likely would, take it. They are both big skilled guys at their positions and could step in right away. And with the Canes history of letting guys play quickly (See Staal and Skinner) it could be a good fit.

My Prediction: Canes won’t have a shot at getting Ryan IMHO. As much as I want them to I don’t see it happening. Look for them to keep this pick and take a big forward. Other then the two previously mentioned look for then to go to the Kitchner well (their last two picks are former Kich. Rangers) and take center Radek Faska. Wild card here being if Filip Forseberg slips to 8 do they take him????

I will update this tonight with some re-cap or the draft when I get home from the bar watching it!
