Red Box Review: The Wolfman (2010)

The Wolfman (2010– 103mins) G. Del Toro, A. Hopkins, E. Blunt, H. Weaving

Here we have yet another incarnation of the fabled wolfman story. It’s set overall in old England, which makes normal sense and all, but I just don’t tend to enjoy this setting for movies. Sometimes it is ok and all (Shanghai Knights) but for the most part the whole drab and dreary thing just isn’t my cup of tea.  The movie starts off easy basic enough. Lawrence Talbot’s (Del Toro) brother is missing and turns up murdered. Upon returning back home to investigate the murder Talbot reconnects with his creepy, low talking father (played by the usual low talking Hopkins) and his brother’s fiance Gwen (Blunt). Turns out his brother has been killed by some sort of beast. Well while searching for info on his brother’s murder Talbot is bitten and cursed by the wolfman itself.

From here we begin to learn of the odd past of the family and learn there might be more secrets that Lawrence has blocked from his memories. As the cycle begins to turn and the initial transformation begins the story starts to unfold more and more and we get a tasty twist. Unfortunately the twist is both slightly predictable and not very compelling. The story itself begins slow gets going decently but then goes right back to slow again.  There are also plenty of dropped in objects and ideas that they seem to put in there to refer back to at a later time but just never really keep up with that bargain at all. This leaves us a bit empty with the movie and keeps us scratching our head. It’s more of a feeling that at then end you say, hey it’s over but what about X or Y, why didn’t they use this or come back to that. I am not sure it completely leaves us full as a movie. However, it’s kind of a been there done that story that we don’t really care at all anyway b/c we won’t be coming back to it again.

Verdict—>   The Wolfman is entertaining at times, and for fans of the genre it will be ok to watch. But for the person looking for a blockbuster, you need to look elsewhere. Being the end of the summer season there is entirely too many good blockbusters in the Red Box to really warrant a big recommendation on it. If you must find a monster movie and seen everything else ok, but go ahead and skip it.
