DC Universe Online seems to be coming along quite well.

Published by under MMOs

I think this delay in the release for DC Universe Online might be a good thing. Case in point how beautiful the graffics and gameplay seem to look. I am not too concerned about the lack of costume options initially in the game b/c I am a guy who loves LOOT drops off of mob kills and it really gives you something to shoot for. If you want to get another feel of how the game is coming along check out the character creation trailer and another game trailer the released this week. (Warning some blood and stuff so careful with small children). I think you will be fairly impressed at how good it looks and I am hoping the gameplay is as fun as it looks.

Something else I missed… The guild season 4 finale was posted this week.

Published by under The Guild

It’s a great watch, quite possibly one of my favorite episodes of the season and maybe of all the 4 seasons as well. I hope the next one starts soon b/c this ends awesome and hints at a great theme for the next season as well as a possible special guest for the next season as well??? We can only hope!

Back from vacation …SO what’d I miss??

Well the GeekJock has returned from the beach and the sun. It was a good week off with some great fun with the family and friends. The week started a bit cooler but that wasn’t anywhere near enough to get the family down. A great beach house and not having to work or go to school had the entire family happy as hell the whole week.

The good thing about the vacation is I pretty much tried to stay away from the computer and just focus on hanging out with everyone. So naturally, I missed some of the happenings in the sports and gaming world.

First and foremost on my sports list is the firing of Omar Minaya and Jerry Manuel. As a die-hard and struggling Mets fan this is a good thing to me. Omar started off as a decent enough GM then the true colors emerged quite quickly a few years ago and we realized he is just as full of shit and an awful GM as any of the worst in baseball. The usual ability of the Mets front off ice to avoid admitting mistakes and not taking care of them (Oliver Perez, Luis Castillo to name 2) has tried my patience over the last few years so hopefully the new regime, whomever it becomes, will start some house cleaning and bring in some winning players without breaking the bank. We all love some decent spending but it should be SMART decent spending.

The next big thing this week was the start of the NHL season. Fortunately I didn’t miss this at all. I watched most of the first two games the Canes played from Finland and somehow they managed to pull out 2 victories. The only real time I thought they played poorly was the beginning of the first game when they seemed to come out a bit flat. But they rebounded nicely and found their groove and were able to power thru it and win the game. Brandon Sutter looked awesome and will be a force again this year in a new leadership role for the youngster as he got awarded with the “A” this season as one of the alternate captains on the squad. The second game was something which we might see a lot this year. A game where Cam Ward has to stand on his head for the Canes to have a shot. They couldn’t muster up much offense and he kept them in the game long enough to get it to a shoot out. However, opposite to how the vast majority of the last few seasons have been, the Canes picked up the Shoot out win 1-0 on a REAL nice goal by rookie Jeff Skinner and the shutout in the shoot out by Cam as well.  With any luck this could be a good thing for the team going forward. Obviously the 2-0 start is good but if they can use this road trip off the continent to get some camaraderie and team building, then it could translate into a great bond and lead to a hard fighting team night in and night out and bring them to the playoffs. At the very least I am hoping this will continue the next few weeks as they are on the usual early season marathon road trip. Every year they start on a big roadie b/c the North Carolina State Fair is in Raleigh, and the fair grounds are right next to the RBC center and NC state’s football stadium. So they ship the Canes out of town for those couple of weeks b/c frankly having a game during this time is a parking/traffic NIGHTMARE. They found this out a few years ago when they had an NC State football game, the fair, and a Canes game all in the same weekend and it was a complete disaster. However usually they have one or two home games before the fair but this year the Finland trip happened so the 1st home game of the season (at the RBC center) won’t be until Oct 27th. That weekend will be a tough one too with Wash and Pitt coming to town. Nothing like a little test early on. My hopes? I am hoping they get thru this little roadie at least .500 and then use that momentum, and a hugely home heavy rest of the year, to get some much needed points and attendance.

Ok onto gaming.

I have been scouring the MMO news and for what I look for only a few big headlines have stuck out.

Wow:Cataclysm confirmed to be released Dec. 7th. So the 2nd of the rumors eventually became reality. The 1st date in Nov was rumored to be pushed back to Dec which now is known to be reality. So that’s all fine with me. I want it now (as we all do) but eh, the next few months are generally full with in game Holiday events (Halloween and thanksgiving in game events) so that should give us something to do. Also, we cannot forget that now that we know it’s coming I am fairly sure that there will be the occasional release world pre-events in game. We will undoubtedly see the skill trees released a week or so before and I am sure we will see the rumblings of the ground and such and some cataclysmic in game event leading up to that faithful day…. Now to see where I can make sure I can get the collector’s edition… hmmm…

Also announced this week is that WoW’s subscriber base has officially topped 12 million! This mainly had to do with the big rollout of Lich King in China. With all the trouble they had to get it rolled out there for the last 2 years I am guessing they are kinda happy now that it is out, so they can reap those benefits of their subscriptions and then also delay Cataclysm a bit there and have that extra boost later as well. Either way good job boys keep the money flowing in, the stockholder in me is happy Smile

AND FINALLY….

In not so surprising news DC Universe Online has pushed their release back from early Nov to “early in 2011”. Not really a surprise to me b/c there was no real open beta phase which is integral to any launch, even if some only use this as stress test. They then also announced that anyone who has pre-ordered and sends them a snapshot of your receipt (from a link on their official site DCUO ) you will get to be in the open beta by the end of Nov. You have to do this by Nov 15th to be able to be included in this. ME? I won’t be doing it. Two reasons for this. #1 the end of Nov and on from there will be full of Cataclysm prep and play. Sorry SOE you will have to prove it to me in the form of reviews out on the web for me to decide to play. If you had released in NOV with a full and ready version I prob would have played for at least a month to check it out. Now? Now I will be waiting till I get tired of Cat and listen to some reviews before I leap. Oh and # 2 a photo and sending it to their site is too much of a pain in the ass. Why not do what other games have done? Get the pre-order boxes out there with a code that gets you into open beta. Maybe they did this on purpose maybe not, either way both of these will keep me out of that beta and that game for that matter for a little while.

Ahh it’s good to be back at home with some more time off from work to get my rest from my vacation bwahahaha.

GJ out…

New York Islanders 2010-2011 Season Preview

Published by under Hockey,Islanders

Hello, my name is Kevroc and I am covering the Isles for GeekJock this season. I was excited to get busy and write a blog entry full of hope and promise but, then came the preseason scrimmages….

Boom, Mark Streit (shoulder) out six months. Bang, Kyle Okposo (shoulder) out two months. There goes arguably the best d-man and forward on the team. When you think Islanders and “injury”, a certain Rick DiPietro comes to mind. Well, he is supposedly healthy coming into this season, so there is a positive. If he can’t go, Dwayne Roloson and his 40+ year old self will be in the nets, as Marty Biron is now wearing a rags jersey.

The power play is going to suffer the most with the losses of Streit and Okposo. The burden is really going to fall on the (shoulders) of Tavares, Moulson and Bailey. It will be interesting to see if Trent Hunter has anything left as he has surely lost a step or two over the last couple seasons. Also, I am very curious how much Rob Schremp will/can contribute to the club this year. He has the skills and will get his chances to climb the depth chart. Blake Comeau finished last season with an eye opening flourish and can surely improve. Frans Nielsen has been an unsung stud. On any other team he could be a showcase player, I’m actually surprised he still wears an Isles jersey. Looking forward to another season of watching him.  The off-season moves were more of the defensive nature and little if any scoring punch was added. Losses of Bergenheim and Tambellini are hardly tempered by the addition of P.A. Parenteau!First round draft pick Nino Niederreiter is just 18 years old but, don’t be surprised if he gets a chance to contribute. Yes, there is a lot of youth out there and some fragility but, have no fear! The off-season move that will probably end up being the fans favorite move was the addition of enforcer Zenon Konopka. Only 6’0 205 but, this scrappy personality rolled up 265 PIMs last season with the lightning and I look forward to seeing him mix it up out there.

But, the blue line is most definitely deeper with the acquisitions of Jurcina, Eaton and Wisniewski. That depth will be called upon early with Streit on the shelf for six months. As it remains to be seen at the time of this writing if they will make a move for one of the d-men currently on the waiver wire. The most prominent names on that short list are Sheldon Souray, Wade Redden or 40+ year old Mathieu Schneider. The returning d-men from last year are not a bunch to get overly excited about either though. Radek Martinek has an ambulance that follows him around the ice just in case, Bruno Gervais seems like a stalled talent. He seems to have topped out and frankly is a disappointment in my opinion. The two returnees that I look forward to watching are Jack Hillen and Andy MacDonald. Hillen has wheels and will see a huge leap in icetime. MacDonald was super impressive in my eyes last year. The 24 year old who has spent many years in the AHL, has made very few mistakes and has proven to be ultra-reliable.

While most of the goal scoring will most likely come from the Tavares, Moulson, Bailey and Neilsen, Scott Gordon will have to be creative on special teams. The power play is in need of a quarterback during Streit’s absence. Martinek can move it a bit, and perhaps Doug Weight who returns for another season. The PK unit is going to be an adventure. I’m sure Jon Sim will be a big part of it but, the loss of Richard Park is disasterous. He was a penalty-killing gem.

All in all, I would like to say that this team could battle for a bottom four playoff spot but, with their best d-man missing the first six months and team leader Okposo out for two months… it looks like a possible lottery pick finish. But, with that being said, this is still a team worth watching this season. There is a ton of budding talent here and there will no doubt be some highlight reel action. The expectations are low but, there will be excitement. Especially if you are studying sports medicine or physical therapy.

GeekJock’s views on the Fall premier week that was…AKA what I will be watching this year

Published by under TV

So it’s another great time of the year. Kinda like the spring season is great for finale’s, the fall brings the re-birth which is the premier season. I won’t really go into all the shows, b/c quite frankly I didn’t watch THAT much TV this week. Another minor down point (TV-wise) from work is since I go in at 9pm, I don’t really get to watch much 8pm TV. Which kinda blows in a sense b/c there are some good shows on at eight that I would want to catch. Some which we DVR (like NCIS and now Big Bang Theory), and some new ones which I want to see but haven’t yet (like No Ordinary family). But I will DVR a good amount of shows this year and see what I can catch on my weeks off as well.

Ok so here is some random thoughts on shows by Day of the week.

Monday. Of the shows I cannot watch but love on Monday’s are House and How I Met Your Mother. House, well b/c it’s just great, and HIMYM which has the king of funny Neil Patrick Harris, and the lovely Alyson Hannigan (who is tied for 1st on my “List” with the equally lovely Felicia Day).

Two and a Half Men. As usual they didn’t disappoint, cept maybe for Charlie Sheen’s hair which was a bit freeky and just looked odd. I am sure it will be the usual great season by them.

Mike and Mollywas pretty good I have to say. Billy Gardill reminds me of Jackie Gleason from honeymooners when he has the cop hat on talking to his buddy doing the Art Carney part (Yes I know Cramden was a bus driver but he just kinda looked like it a bit). Melissa McCarthy brings a bunch of spunk and energy to the female lead and they seem to gel well together. Katey Mixon (Four Christmases) and Swoozie Kurtz as the best friend and mom respectively, were damn funny as well in the 1st episode I saw this week. I hope it can keep it fresh after all the self effacing fat jokes get old.

The ten o’clock slot is a real killer decision. We normally watch Castle(with another king of funny Captain Hammer himself Nathan Fillion) which is a great show, but this week we went with Hawaii Five-O. I gotta say, O’loughlin and Caan did an awesome job of carrying the show and I think their rapport and the writing could be good enough to keep this show around. I really liked it, and it could find a DVR slot sometime soon.

Tuesday. Here we have another watching conundrum. The 8 o’clock time slot has No Ordinary Family, which I want to watch but it will never last if it has to go up against the # 1 drama on TV===> NCIS. NCIS is simply too good. It’s going to own this time slot for some time to come so other networks better get used to moving anything they want to keep around. So ABC listen up, move the family super hero show somewhere better so it can stay. I will have to catch it on demand or on line to see how it was (stay tuned for that review sooner or later). Before I go any further let me say, NAY let me SCREAM….. GLEE BLOWS… Ahh that feels better…

At nine we went with the new Fox Comedies.

Raising Hope. I noticed by the posts on FB by my friends that it was gettnig mixed reviews, but I have to say Thumbs way up from the GeekJock. I thought Lucas Neff was excellent as the straight guy amongst a huge bunch of knuckleheads. I described it as Earl without the “list”, which is kinda funny b/c later I noticed it’s made by the same guy who made My Name is Earl, so I guess that’s by design. It’s got that same quick wit, constant humor that I really love. It’s gpt so many funny lines that sometimes you are still laughing at one thing and you miss the next joke b/c you are laughing at the last one.

Running Wilde. This one has Wil Arnett and Keri Russell. Seems good enough right? Wrong. I didn’t like it at all. Some funny things here and there but jst didn’t really grab me at all. The show has a decent enough premise to it but then you add in David Cross and it just makes you want to jump off a cliff waiting for the half hour to end. Sorry, this one is in need of a replacement and fast.

This brings us to the 10 slot. Well nothing is really jumping out at me so we went with Parenthood. Mainly b/c I love Lauren Graham and Dax Shepherd is always good as well. Besides being a little behind on the plot (Thanks to the old Lady in the Cube across the room for answering my Q’s to get me up to speed), I kinda enjoyed it. I like the stories and how they go together and that it’s not cheesy. Good mix of family drama and some funny quips. It’s Brothers and Sistersbut actually GOOD. (listen up ABC it’s time to put Bs & Ss out of it’s misery)

Wednesday. 8 O clock kinda blows. there really isn’t anything I want to see here. Special notice to CBS—> Survivor is SOOO DONE, please leave us alone with it.. Thanks! On to 9 O’clock.

Modern Family/Cougar Town–> Not much new here, these two are great. MF is the 2nd best comedy on TV right now (2nd only to Big Bang) and CT is just good enough to keep us laughing, and actually gets better the more episodes of it you watch. The real disappointment at 9 is that I won’t be watching Hell’s Kitchen b/c of these and I really wish Fox would move it to Sat or Fri, basically a night where crap else is on. But being that there is 10000 commercials during HK it might be a good one to give a DVR slot to.

The Whole Truth. The Rob Morrow Maura Tierney courtroom drama gets the nod over the Vegas lawyers of The Defeners (who just seem a bit annoying) and the new Law and Order. Mostly b/c we all know the L&O will end up on TNT so I will be able to catch that one on there, but also b/c The Whole Truthis the best one here. Morrow and Tierney have a great back and forth going and the cases so far (yes I know 2 weeks) have been good. I am not sure I like that they both have had a twist to the end, but on the other hand I would MUCH rather know if people are REALLY guilty or not, as opposed to us just getting the TV jury’s view of it (like in most L&O’s). It’s kinda cool to get  that closure to all episodes.

Thursday. CBS has kinda annoyed me b/c they moved Big Bang here. Not that Iwon’t watch b/c it’s the BEST SHOW ON TV, but b/c I will now only be able to watch it on DVR. (Again this is the dreaded 8 o’clock hour which means I am either doing the shower/drive to work thing, or the get the kids to bed thing in that hour) Mainly it also means I haven’t checked out the new show #$%@ my dad says either. Hopefully I can catch some re-runs on the weekend sometime so I can see if Shatner is worth a sit-com. In theory I love Communityb/c it’s funny as hell and b/c Joel McHale is awesome but I don’t get to watch it much (here’s hoping for syndication!). As for the king of the ratings 40 Rock, I have kinda boycotted it a bit. Without getting too political (which I swear I will try and NEVER do on my blog), politics is the main reason why I cannot watch the Tina Fey/NBC show. I loved it at first and it is funny but Fey/NBC just CONSTANTLY have to throw left-wing jokes into it. We get it Fey you don’t like Republicans but do we have to hear about it every Thursday? It’s bad enough that we have to wait 10 mins after SNL starts to ever see something funny but now your show too? Shame on you Fey and NBC. Get the politics out of the comedy show and maybe I’ll come back, but right now sorry just can’t do it.

Grey’s Anatomy. I originally watched amd loved the smash phenomenon b/c it reminded me of my 4th year of Pharmacy school. Picture these guys when they are in the hospital and asked questions on rounds, and throw in a few pharmacy students with them, and that’s how it was. (Minus all the sex of course) Just the back and forth and the anxiety over being right or wrong and the various personalities really helped to have the show hit home. THEN they went there and made Grey’s a soap opera sex and incest fest and it started to lose me. Don’t get me wrong, I know that was the whole idea, it’s a soap at night, but they went to the drama staples/tricks way too soon. The Torres/George wedding/ divorce just put it all over the edge and having to listen to the two whinny asses of Heigl and Knight in the press was a huge turn off as well. However, since I work with mostly women I have to watch this and Private Practiceon Thursdays. I had been on Ipod land on Thursdays until the end of last season when Grey’s actually started to get good again, and I was quite surprised to see that last week’s premiere was back to being good television again. I hope they can keep it up.

The Office.  Yes we all love this show at work, but because of the time slot we watch it more in syndication so we will have to wait till all the new seasons make it there. And yes, we are also bummed Carrell is leaving. Will it last? I hope so but will have to be good writing and a good boss to keep it good.

Private Practice. Dear God, where to I start. Well I guess I won’t. Cancel this show now. I know, move Grey’s to 10 and put No Ordinary Family on at 9 and I will be happy. K? Thanks

Friday. There isn’t a whole lot to say about Friday. I love the direction Smallville has been going lately. Getting more and more DC Comic heros and villains in it is AWESOME. So it’s going to be on the DVR or a certain watch when on DVD.

Blue Bloods. This was the only new show we watched on Friday. I thought it was good also. A decent dynamic of a family of Cops and a lawyer as well. Everyone does things a different way, everyone has secrets and I am sure they will all clash all season long. The jury is still out about the whole background constant theme of the whole secret society and the feds investigating it and trying to get the younger son involved too. It’s something that kinda borders on writing flaws and not being believable for what we as viewers will think the character would really do. So they will have to do some work to keep us happy with the plot I think.

Saturday Night Live. Poehler as the 1st host was awesome. I am a sucker for special guests (having Timberlake and the gov. of NY on was a huuge thumbs up!)  too so this week was fine with me. It was just as funny as always, but as usual the new cast members will have to grow on us over time. Oh and Katy Perry… HOT as hell but wow she sucked live. I am sure SNL will have another great year. BUT let me tell you hosts for 2 shows. As always # 1 on the list is Timberlake. The guy is flat out funny. And # 2 is Rhett and Link . It doesn’t get better then these guys with respect to comedy songs/sketches. They could be in the sketches and do the musical guest as well. Go to their site, or you tube and you will see.

Sunday. Sunday is another dead zone for me with TV when at work. Desperate Housewivesand Brothers and Sistersis always on our TV on sundays and they both SUCK. They really need to be cancelled b/c they are both just DONE. The show I am most looking forward to will be an On Demand show from HBO. Boardwalk Empire looks to be the next great HBO drama and I can’t wait to catch it in action this week while I am off. I hope I can watch the 1st one before the next one hits the airwaves on Sunday night.

So there you have it folks. This is my opinions on the new season of TV and a few shows I will have to comment on later to let you know what I thought. Since I am headed to the beach this weekend for a week I prolly won’t be posting for a bit so this novel of a post might need to last you till then!

Enjoy!

GeekJock out.

New Guild Ep is up. Only one more left this season.. That’s near depressing

Published by under The Guild

The good news, they have posted the week’s “The Guild” episode…. the BAD news, there is only 1 more episode left this season. It’s a good one too with some great lines, almost all by Vork. The end shot is probably one of my favorite shots I have ever seen on the show.

Enjoy! (As usual thanks to www.watchtheguild.com  please check em out.. and let em know the Geekjock sent ya!)

Red Box Review: The Wolfman (2010)

Published by under Movies,Red Box Reviews

The Wolfman (2010– 103mins) G. Del Toro, A. Hopkins, E. Blunt, H. Weaving

Here we have yet another incarnation of the fabled wolfman story. It’s set overall in old England, which makes normal sense and all, but I just don’t tend to enjoy this setting for movies. Sometimes it is ok and all (Shanghai Knights) but for the most part the whole drab and dreary thing just isn’t my cup of tea.  The movie starts off easy basic enough. Lawrence Talbot’s (Del Toro) brother is missing and turns up murdered. Upon returning back home to investigate the murder Talbot reconnects with his creepy, low talking father (played by the usual low talking Hopkins) and his brother’s fiance Gwen (Blunt). Turns out his brother has been killed by some sort of beast. Well while searching for info on his brother’s murder Talbot is bitten and cursed by the wolfman itself.

From here we begin to learn of the odd past of the family and learn there might be more secrets that Lawrence has blocked from his memories. As the cycle begins to turn and the initial transformation begins the story starts to unfold more and more and we get a tasty twist. Unfortunately the twist is both slightly predictable and not very compelling. The story itself begins slow gets going decently but then goes right back to slow again.  There are also plenty of dropped in objects and ideas that they seem to put in there to refer back to at a later time but just never really keep up with that bargain at all. This leaves us a bit empty with the movie and keeps us scratching our head. It’s more of a feeling that at then end you say, hey it’s over but what about X or Y, why didn’t they use this or come back to that. I am not sure it completely leaves us full as a movie. However, it’s kind of a been there done that story that we don’t really care at all anyway b/c we won’t be coming back to it again.

Verdict—>   The Wolfman is entertaining at times, and for fans of the genre it will be ok to watch. But for the person looking for a blockbuster, you need to look elsewhere. Being the end of the summer season there is entirely too many good blockbusters in the Red Box to really warrant a big recommendation on it. If you must find a monster movie and seen everything else ok, but go ahead and skip it.

Red Box Review: Chloe

Published by under Movies,Red Box Reviews

Chloe (2009 — 96 mins) A. Seyfried, L. Neeson, J. Moore

David (Neeson) and Catherine (Moore) are a happily married couple for a long time. Yet, when flirty David misses a flight and thus misses a surprise birthday party, Catherine gets suspicious that he might be having an affair. She approaches an escort,Chloe (Seyfried) to come on to her husband to “test” his faithfulness to her. This goes on for a few episodes of meeting with Chloe as she reports back the encounters. From this end things begin to get complicated. The whole family gets wrapped up in the drama as Chloe gets entrenched in their lives. It’s got some decent suspense, intrigue and twists to it as well. I enjoyed this movie as a change of pace from the usual movies we get to watch. Even tho I saw the twist coming I think it helps the movie as a whole. There are only so many Lolita’sthe world wants to see. This is a bit of a twist on the adultery genre. That’s why I think I can recommend this as a dcent change of pace watch.

The actors all do a good job with their roles. Neeson and Moore don’t play much of a departure from what we have seen them before. Both are vets at the drama/suspense type characters and do it well. The departure from the norm here is seeing Seyfried as the escort. She has been the sweet girl next door who can basically do no wrong in the viewer’s eyes. The normally innocent actress plays more of the mysterious bad girl here. She does play it decently but sometimes she just seems a bit uncomfortable in the role but ultimately she succeeds at showing us a new side of her repertoire.

Verdict—> While not a family movie (AT ALL) due to situations and sex scenes/themes, it is a good watch. If you want to see a change of pace/drama movie it’s a good rental to get at the Red Box. It’s also a decent length for a double feature to pair with an actiony or Rom-com to pair off the heavy drama of it all.

Red Box Review: Letters To Juliet

Published by under Movies,Red Box Reviews

Letters To Juliet (2010– 105 mins)  Amanda Seyfried

Letters is a pretty typical rom-com. Girl with fiance’ meets guy who isn’t great at first, but turns out to be the man of her dreams, fiance’ is not the worst guy in the world but doesn’t pay enough attention to her, girl and dreamy guy have a moment but girl goes back to states with fiance’ and realizes she loves dreamy guy, girl goes back to see dreamy guy and they work it all out in lovey sense and live happily ever after. If I just ruined the movie for you then, you really haven’t seen any romantic comedy in the last 20 years. Don’t worry tho the movie is still charming and rosey and enjoyable for chicks to watch so theywill love it. I can’t really say it’s terribly great for guys but you could do a lot worse. Just make sure you take some trips to the kitchen to re-fresh her drink so it might go a little quicker then the 106 mins it’s at.

Ok so obviously there is a little more to the plot and here we go… Seyfried plays Sophie, a fact-checker from the states who goes on a pre-honeymoon with her fiance’ (a budding resteraunteur) to Verona. While in Verona, Sophie discovers the “Letters to Juliet” that people come from all over the world to leave in the romantic place for answers. She finds one which is unanswered and answers it. Upon meeting the elderlly woman from the letter, the duo and the woman’s grandson depart on a voyage, to find the lady’s lost love.

Again straightforward predictable lovey stuff but contrary to what I thought it wasn’t half bad. Seifried has those eyes that draw you in when she smiles and gets you to like her. This is also bringing me back to a point I made a few weeks ago about rom-coms. I would much rather see the woman be single, or have an ass of a boyfriend/fiance’. Here we have what I don’t like to see in movies, the fiance’ who isn’t bad, he’s not a druggie, he’s not an abuser, his only crime is having a busy job and a fiance who wants to follow silly dreams and fairy tales. This poor guy who obviously loves his fiance’ and works hard as hell to start a bustling business to provide for them just gets shit on by this girl. I tend to loathe these type of story archs. Sure we have to get the girl to fall in love with the dreamy Englishman but they could have thought of something better for the fiance’ arch. Why not have her overseas for a job for her employer or coming off of a relationship. Writers should get a bit more creative then this.

Verdict—> Chicks will love this movie. It’ happy and predictable to a tee but women will still love the story and the dreamy Britt. Guys get it for a date night if you want to impress your woman but take some no-doze first. Good brownie points movie.

Red Box Review: Harry Brown

Published by under Movies,Red Box Reviews

Harry Brown (2009– 103 mins) Michael Caine

Michael Caine is Harry Brown, an ex military man who doesn’t have much left in his life. His wife is in terminal condition in the hospital, his best friend is constantly being harassed by the local gangs, and he himself has a nasty case of emphysema. When the two people he loves most in the world are taken from him it puts him in a real depressed state of mind. All it takes is a little shove by one of the local gang members who took his friend from him, and the lack of the police to prosecute the killers, which all push Harry over the edge. He then becomes the vigilante trying to find justice.

The difference here then in other movies, is Harry is not a super hero and isn’t invincible. He’s an old man who can, at times, barely breathe. All he has going is his intelligence and his former training. It seems like a good plot idea but it’s done just a bit too slow and not completely enough. The whole movie is shot as almost as in a post-apocalyptic world. Again decent point but still not done to a great end. It’s not that I didn’t like the end or it was a bad ending it’s just that it all just felt meh. I think the premise could have been brought about a bit better b/c I just felt like something was missing. As usual I can’t understand thick accents at all when in movies which detracts a bit too.

Verdict—> It’s not a great date/family/group movie. It’s really only for those people who love Caine, or those who enjoy the movies that are different. I don’t think I would recommend this to too many people. Not awful but just not much better then an OK watch. I expected a bit more from it.
